Bike Parking Index
This year I picked up biking, and after I started biking to places more instead of driving, I noticed something pretty quickly:
I don't always feel safe leaving my bike on the street.
I talked to some other riders about this, and realized we all kind of do the same: we don't lock our bikes to the "best" spot, we lock them to the first rack we see (sometimes, not even a rack) and hope for the best.
Cities across the U.S. are investing heavily in biking infrastructure, but this part still feels unresolved.
💡 Over the past few weekends, I’ve been playing with an idea called Bike Parking Index (BPI), exploring how signals like lighting, pedestrian traffic, incident history, and community feedback can be translated into something riders can use to quickly evaluate where to park.
I’ve put together a landing page to share the concept:
It’s still very much a work in progress, but curious to hear people's thoughts. What’s the bike parking situation like in your city? Is it also a guessing game?
